Nina Lyon Bennett, PhD, CFCS-HDFS

                        Dr. Nina Lyon Bennett has 20+ years of combined teaching, research, writing, and administrative experience.  She is currently a tenured Associate Professor & Chair of the Department of Human Ecology.  In this capacity, she oversees the current academic program, which has six areas of concentration and over 200 majors.  She is also Program Director for the Online Certificate Program in Family Financial Planning.  She attended Clark Atlanta University, in Atlanta, GA where she earned her undergraduate and master’s degree in sociology.  She earned her PhD in Child & Family Development at the University of Georgia.  Dr. Lyon Bennett has earned graduate certificates in social gerontology, women’s studies, and family financial planning. She has also earned the professional certification from the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences in Human Development and Family Studies.

Dr. Lyon Bennett is a member of the graduate faculty at UMES, as well as the Board on Human Sciences and the Council of Administrators of Family and Consumer Sciences.  She currently serves as secretary for the 1890 Council of Administrators of Family & Consumer Sciences, and is the immediate past secretary/newsletter editor for the National Coalition of Black Development in Family Consumer Sciences.  She is a committee member for the advisory board for the Teacher Academy of Maryland for Family Consumer Sciences in Prince Georges County, the Family Consumer Sciences Supervisors Committee for the State of Maryland, and a member of the Professional Education Unit at UMES, representing FCS Teacher Education for the Department of Human Ecology.

Dr. Lyon Bennett has garnered over $500,000 in external support through grantsmanship, and currently serves as project director for three grants, all of which are designed to increase student enrollment, involvement in and awareness of the profession.  Dr. Lyon Bennett recognizes the importance of collegiality, service, and community involvement.  To that end, she has served on a number of University committees, continues to advise students, and advocates on behalf of the Department.  Moreover, she promotes the field of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Department of Human Ecology, and UMES at various venues, locally, regionally, and nationally.  Dr. Lyon Bennett currently reserves as a reviewer for the Journal of Extension (JOE).  She has served as a textbook reviewer for two Lifespan Development textbooks, a proposal reviewer for AAFCS and NCFR, and has presented at numerous professional conferences, including the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences, the Southern Rural Sociological Association, the National Social Science Association Professional Development Conference, the Office of Rural Health Policy, the Rural Health Outreach Grantees Meeting, and the Clemson University Cooperative Extension Annual Meeting.  Dr. Lyon-Bennett has conducted several workshops and professional development seminars for various agencies, including the Caroline County (MD) Department of Social Services, the Lower Shore of Maryland Resource Child Development Center, WIC, AmeriCorps, the Athens, GA Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Shore Up, and the Woman-to-Woman Conference at Howard University.

Dr. Lyon Bennett has received numerous awards, including the Webb-Godfrey-Hill Award for Excellence in Distance Education, awarded for the Department of Human Ecology’s 2+2 Child Development Program by the American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC), National Excellence in College and University Distance Education.  In 2010, she received the Outstanding Family & Consumer Sciences Professional award from the National Coalition for Black Development in Family & Consumer Sciences.  In 2008, she was nominated for the BD Mayberry Young Scientist Award and the National Awards Program for Excellence in College and University Teaching in the Food and Agricultural Sciences.  Dr. Lyon Bennett is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society, Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society, and Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society.
